Meet Captain Michael Merriam
The "Whale Whisperer"
Born and raised in San Diego, Capt. Michael’s soul has always belonged to the Pacific. From his earliest days watching dolphins arc through the surf beside his dad, Michael has been captivated by the wild drama of the ocean.
His fascination turned into obsession as a teenager, surfing and freediving La Jolla’s kelp forests, chasing glimpses of whales and dolphins. Earning a biology degree at SDSU only deepened his curiosity about the lives unfolding just offshore. Driven by awe for the Pacific’s great mammals, Michael spent years at sea, earning his captain’s license while documenting the breathtaking spectacles of blue whales, orcas, and massive dolphin pods.
Capt. Michael’s vivid wildlife films—featured on Peacock, CBS, Fox, PBS, and displayed at the San Diego Natural History Museum—invite others to experience the wonder he feels every day.
Thriving in San Diego’s maritime community, he is a passionate advocate for ocean conservation and wildlife protection. He relishes the thrill of searching for whales and dolphins in their wild habitat, and, as an expert drone pilot, finds his greatest joy capturing these moments for our guests.

San Diego’s coastal waters are full of amazing sea life. The most common sightings will be California Sea Lions, Harbor Seals, Long- and Short-beaked Dolphins, and Bottlenose Dolphins. As for whales, Gray Whales are a common sight during the December-April migration. Other times during the year, Humpback, Blue, and the elusive Minke are present. On rare occasions, Orcas have been spotted just off the coast of La Jolla.
Seasickness has yet to happen on Riviera. However, for your comfort on the water, we recommend taking a preventative seasickness remedy before boarding. Even guests who rarely experience motion sensitivity often find that a simple precaution makes the day more enjoyable. Bonine® (meclizine) taken the night before or at least one hour prior to departure is widely regarded as the most effective option, with minimal drowsiness. A light meal and good hydration are also advised.
Riviera is a French-built 51-foot sailing yacht. Although we prefer to sail, we do use our engine when the wind is light.
We have a fabulous appetizer menu that can be customized to your most specific requests. Also included is a full premium bar, a fantastic wine list, and champagne.
As much as we wish the whales had showtimes like a movie theater, there are occasions when these magnificent creatures remain out of sight. Even so, a voyage aboard Riviera offers an unforgettable offshore adventure—one that remains richly rewarding, regardless of whether the whales make an appearance.
Absolutely. If you, your children, or friends have never sailed offshore, this luxury day on the open water is both educational and unforgettable.
We suggest dressing in layers and wearing a hat and sunglasses. Ocean temperatures range from 60 to 80 degrees, depending on the time of year. Riviera is well-equipped with heated blankets and plenty of shade protection. We also recommend applying ample sunblock prior to boarding.
Riviera stands apart by offering a truly luxurious, private whale-watching experience. Enjoy personalized service, gourmet cuisine, and fine wines aboard our elegant French-built sailing yacht. For a one-of-a-kind touch, we also offer optional drone coverage to capture breathtaking aerial footage of your adventure.
