“You haven’t lived until you’ve sailed.”
– David Sedaris
Anyone fortunate enough to have stood on the deck of a sailing vessel as it cuts through the sea powered only by wind knows this to be true.
In a world where adults spend, on average, a staggering 7 hours per day in front of a screen, a day spent sailing can be life-changing.
If you’re reading this at work, stop for a minute, put your phone down, and close your eyes. Don’t worry, Joyce in accounting already thinks you’re a bit nutty.
Follow me on this: Close your eyes, take a deep breath, and imagine yourself standing on the windward side of a sailboat as it glides through the water. Hold onto the shrouds, feel the sunlight, smell the sea, and hear the sound of the water as it folds under the hull. This is paradise; this is Riviera.
Summer is here, and I’m excited to announce Riviera’s newest sailing experience: a 6-7-hour afternoon sail that allows us to explore San Diego’s coastal waters.
This full day on the water is designed exclusively for the summer season. It’s a rare opportunity to disconnect from the world and immerse yourself in the beauty of the sea. Unlike typical 2-3 hour sailing tours on San Diego Bay, the Ocean Sail is perfect for those needing to “unplug” themselves from life on land.
We depart at 1:00 PM for a day on the open Pacific Ocean. We head south toward the Coronado Islands in Mexico or northwest up the coast to La Jolla while enjoying your favorite craft cocktails and appetizers. The typical wind pattern will offer exciting, fast-paced sailing as we head upwind. Along the way, we’ll see California Sea Lions, dolphins, and, depending on the time of year, possibly a whale or two.
By 5:00PM, we’ll drop anchor in one of the many gorgeous San Diego anchorages and enjoy a fantastic dinner aboard while we watch the sun dip into the Pacific horizon.
One of my favorite anchorages in the later afternoon is Smuggler’s Cove. This quiet cove, just east of the tip of Pt Loma, is private and offers views of the entrance to San Diego Bay. We’ll fire up the bar-b-que and make a fabulous dinner while we enjoy the sunset.
After dinner, you’ll settle into one of the lounge chairs on the bow and truly understand the definition of luxury: peaceful, quiet, and private. It’s a strange juxtaposition to be so isolated, yet only a few hundred yards from the fast-paced hustle of the 8th largest city in the U.S.
We’ll let the faint downwind breeze carry us into the harbor. The sunlight fades, time stands still and the glow of the city lights dancing off the glassy water welcomes us back to the marina.
Say “Yes!” to this new experience. Follow this link: Off Shore Sailing, and book your favorite date. Or, better yet, contact me directly, and we’ll plan the day together.
