I’ve witnessed the evolution of San Diego’s Waterfront all my life. As a teenager armed with my camera, I rode my bike through the railroad yard wastelands before the creation of Seaport Village and on the boardwalk planks of the Embarcadero, and watched the Portuguese and Italian tuna fisherman unload their catches.
For many years, San Diego reminded me of a 12-year-old kid who didn’t know what she wanted to be when she grew up. Military/Defense drove our economy along with a sprinkling of tourism. But that was then, and today, San Diego’s economic engines are rich with diversity.
Finally, San Diego has put on its “Big Girl” pants and is joining the ranks of major city revivals like Tampa, Detroit, Milwaukee, and Baltimore. Through innovative and extensive redevelopment, San Diego is transforming its waterfront’s once dingy industrial eyesores into a world-class cityfront with a well-thought-out, modern, and diverse mix of parks, retail spaces, tourist attractions, and hotels.
This slow 40+ year makeover of the San Diego waterfront and skyline is now in high gear. Starting with The Rady Shell. Our $85 million shining example of the philanthropic spirit, alive and well in San Diego, is just the beginning of the proposed 3.6 billion dollar waterfront redevelopment.
The Rady Shell, San Diego’s answer to the iconic Hollywood Bowl, stands out with its unique location and world-class performances, making it a venue like no other.
If you’ve never experienced an outdoor concert on the bay at the new Rady Shell Amphitheater, put it on this year’s to-do list. We offer a 5-hour Concert / Dinner / Sailing package for up to 6 guests. Perfect for that special birthday or anniversary. Go online and search for this year’s lineup at the Shell. Pick your favorite artist and contact us for availability. Again, this is a private sailing/dinner experience for you and your guests. No traffic, parking issues or lines at the bathroom. Just you and your friends, relaxing on a cozy yacht, enjoying the music on the bay, as we cater to your every need.
The sound quality at the Shell is unparalleled. And, while you may not see the sweat on the brows of Kool & The Gang or have Melissa Ethridge toss you a guitar pick, seeing the backdrop of the city skyline against Shell’s view will fill you with pride, knowing you’re part of San Diego’s new era.
